Base deficit in the immediate postoperative period of open-heart surgery and patient outcome
Abstarct Background: Base deficit is a non-respiratory indicator of acid base status that evaluates the severity of shock at the cellular level. Base deficit results from cellular metabolism of pyruvate under anaerobic conditions. In this situation, base deficit is a sensitive marker of the magnitude of anaerobic metabolism and tissue oxygen deficit [1]. Several studies have shown a strong pos...
متن کاملDelirium in Immediate Postoperative Period in a Patient Operated for Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy: A Case Report
On the night before the surgery, she was given tablet ranitidine 150mg and tablet alprazolam 0.5mg, as per our routine protocol. On the day of surgery, she was wheeled to the operation theater, her intravenous line was put and ringer lactate infusion was started. Monitoring included 5-lead electrocardiography, pulse oximetry, non-invasive blood pressure and end-tidal carbondi-oxide concentratio...
متن کاملPosition of patient and respiratory function in immediate postoperative period.
Respiratory function was studied in 19 patients placed in both the supine and sitting positions in the early postoperative period. Although the sitting position was expected to improve respiratory function, no such advantage was found; instead, a small but statistically significant deterioration in arterial oxygenation was found in most patients when sitting up. It is concluded that no respirat...
متن کامل[Postoperative delirium].
This article reviews the incidence, pathophysiological hypotheses, and etiology of postoperative delirium, especially in the elderly. Preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative risk factors for delirium following surgery are discussed. Results of various studies on postoperative delirium appear hardly comparable due to methodological and population differences. Therefore, it is difficult t...
متن کاملPostoperative delirium.
Mr. A, a 50-year-old English-speaking Korean man, presented to the hospital with right scapular pain. CT of the chest showed two masses, and a CT-guided fine-needle aspiration biopsy study revealed poorly differentiated non-smallcell carcinoma of the lung. MRI of the brain, with and without gadolinium, showed neither a mass lesion nor abnormal enhancement suggestive of metastatic disease.
